If you had the misfortune of arriving haggard and tired at the Hat Yai train station you’ve probably already been told that there’s only one bus to Malaysia today because of “Muslim Holiday”. This is another version of the Bangkok “it’s closed today” while your Tuk-Tuk driver takes you somewhere that pays commission. The best and sometimes only way to get to Georgetown, Butterworth, Penang Malaysia is by mini bus. It shouldn’t cost more than 300-400 Baht and your best bet is to get a taxi to the bus station. Otherwise, if you do book through a train station area travel agency don’t pay the 700 or more Baht they ask for. Safe and happy travels!
